The Science: Allowing the hair to cool in its coiled shape, which locks the hydrogen bonds into a tight curve. The Styling Goal: Longevity & Structural Volume. Student Tip: If the hair is pinned while it is still stone cold, it won't hold. You must pin it while it's hot and leave it until it's cold. Key Tool: Double Prong Metal Clips. These secure the curl flat against the scalp without leaving a dent or crease in the hair.
The Birth of the First Safe Commercial Tint (1907) The Birth of the First Safe Commercial Tint (1907) In 1907, a French chemist named Eugène Schueller took Perkin's chemical foundations and formulated the very first safe, predictable synthetic hair dye. He called it Aureole. Schueller would manufacture the dye at night in his kitchen and sell it to Parisian barbers the next morning. The formula was revolutionary because it didn't just coat the hair like henna or mess it up like lead, it penetrated the hair shaft safely and created reliable shades. The company he founded to sell Aureole? You might have heard of it... it later became L'Oréal. 🤯 What it means for your kit: Schueller mastered the balance of penetration and oxidation. Every time you mix a tube of permanent colour with a developer, you're using the direct evolution of his original kitchen recipe.

The Happy Accident That Changed Everything (1856) The Happy Accident That Changed Everything (1856) How a failed malaria cure created the modern hair dye industry. In 1856, an 18-year-old British chemist named William Perkin was trying to create a synthetic cure for malaria in his home lab in London. Instead, he messed up and created a sludge that turned out to be a brilliant, intense purple dye. He named it Mauveine. 💜 Perkin’s accidental discovery was the foundation for synthetic organic chemicals, leading directly to the discovery of para-phenylenediamine (PPD). PPD is the essential ingredient still used in almost every professional permanent hair colour today to create lasting, realistic shades. The College Connection: Because William Perkin changed the world of colour right here in the UK, we now have the incredible shades we use every day on the salon floor. But because PPD is a known allergen, it’s exactly why we have strict rules around Allergy Alert Testing (AAT). Never skip your 48-hour patch test! 🚫
